Art Uniting People (AUP) began as a subcommittee of the Anti-Stigma HOPE Campaign of the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria.  Art Uniting People is an Alexandria based group of volunteers; coordinating with Alexandria services and school programs who are working to eliminate the fear, lack of understanding and stigma that surrounds those who have a mental illness, developmental disability or substance use disorder.  AUP's goal is to promote art as a form of therapy and the fact that recovery is real and possible, and encourage those dealing with these chronic conditions to participate fully in the community.

“Art Uniting People – A Celebration of Recovery, Creativity and Mental Health”, is an art exhibition presented every year to showcase the artwork by individuals who are affected by mental illness, developmental disability or substance use disorder to bring attention to and foster understanding of the stigma and other issues this community faces. It is an art exhibition dedicated to making a difference and seeks to engage the Alexandria community in a conversation about each person’s uniqueness and the commonality we all share.
